Spa Safety Tips: Hot Tub Wiring
If you are thinking of installing your own home spa it’s a
good idea to leave the hot tub wiring to a licensed electrician
qualified in hooking up the hot tub according to the spa wiring diagram. The
hot tub installation must be done in accordance with applicable local electrical codes and
the National Electrical Code. We all know that water and electricity don’t
mix and it’s important to protect your family and friends from shock and
possibly electrocution.
Most portable hot tubs don’t require
any special wiring as the hot tub heater,
motor and pump is an integral part of the spa. If this is the case, just
follow the instructions and diagrams showing you how to hook up your spa.
Plugging the unit into a dedicated 110V or 220V electrical outlet is all
that is needed. Make sure that the hot tub is plugged into an outlet with a
ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for the best possible protection
against electrocution.
In-ground home spas or hot tubs can be located at quite a distance from the
service panel. You will probably need to route the wiring from the spa to a
nearby disconnect box with a GFCI breaker before running the wires through a
conduit to the service panel. Get this job done by a licensed contractor and
follow the diagram that comes with your new spa to hook everything up
according to the electrical code.
As a general safety precaution, let everyone know where the electrical
switches and circuit beakers are located. Always keep electrical cords and
wires at least 5 feet away from your in-ground or portable home spa or hot tub. If you
own a pool, it’s a good idea to post an emergency plan or diagram showing
what to do in case of shock or electrocution. Let everyone in your family
know where emergency equipment is stored. Pool owners should learn CPR and
proper rescue breathing procedures.
