Doing the Hot Tub Repair Yourself

When you need a hot tub repair for your spa, your first thought may be to call a local dealership to find a contractor who can do the work for you. In the instance of a complex problem, this may be the way to go for your spa repair; however, some repairs can be handled yourself if you have some rudimentary skills and attention to detail.

The shell (the tub part itself that holds the water) will usually last anywhere from twenty-five to thirty years or more on quality home spas or portable hot tubs, so this isn’t usually what needs repaired. In general, the moving and electrical parts are what wear out first on a hot tub, and you will need to determine if you can repair an item or if it is easier to simply replace the damaged part. In most cases, replacing anything like a motor or pump is more economical.

Replacing Electrical Components

First and foremost, before ever working on a faulty part, disconnect all electrical power to your spa. Then, once you know what is wrong, you can get on with the business of repairs. If you’ve had your portable hot tub or spa for more than ten years, consider replacing all of the components at the same time, since it is likely that the others will begin to give out soon as well. Many home manufacturers of home spas now sell kits or packs that contain a controller, motor, blower, hot tub heater and pump together for a lower price than buying individually. These will also provide step-by-step schematics so that you can install them yourself.

Repairing the Shell

If the hot tub shell itself has a small crack that is leaking, there are kits for repairing these that have an acrylic adhesive for filling the crack and making it waterproof. If the shell of your portable home spa has “crazing” (tiny, spidery veins all over the shell), you will need to replace the whole shell.

Be honest about what repairs you feel you can handle on your hot tub, checking out some Internet sites that give instructions on how to do repairs. If you decide you are up to the task, you can save a significant amount of money on repair fees and have your spa running again in an afternoon!
