Your Shopping Guide For Hot Tubs & Home Spas, Covers, Heaters and Accessories

Know What to Look For in a Hot Tub Pump

It’s easy to purchase a complete spa package, but what if you have to purchase a hot tub pump on your own because the motor has given out on yours or it’s cracked? The right spa pump and motor is essential to getting the right water circulation and providing a safe environment.

You should base your choice of a replacement pump on several key concerns that will ensure you purchase the right pump and motor for your spa or portable hot tub. Some things to keep in mind when shopping are:

  • How many pumps can the motor you are considering operate? Some hot tubs have two circulation pumps, and you need a motor able to run both of them.
  • Do you need a motor that can fit into a small, confined space? If your portable home spa is tucked into a tight spot, make sure you’ve measured so that you will be able to reach it for routine maintenance down the line.
  • Understand the difference between the hot tub’s circulation pump (smaller and used to circulate the water continuously to filter and heat the water) and the pumps needed to operate the spa’s jets (larger and used to provide the forceful water jets that cause relaxation).

If you still aren’t sure what’s right for you, call or write to the hot tub’s original manufacturer (the information can usually be found in the spa owner’s manual), and they can suggest the pumps and motors that will work well with your particular model.
