Proper Hot Tub Maintenance Will Ensure Years of Enjoyment

Every hot tub owner can tell you that proper hot tub maintenance will extend the life of your portable home spa and prevent common problems so that you will have minimal upkeep in the long run. Hot tub care, when done properly, is preventative rather than curative; in other words, you shouldn’t have any problems if you remember the upkeep.

Maintaining and caring for your hot tub is essentially about treating both the tub itself and the water that is in it properly. You should drain your hot tub and completely clean the inside walls every three to five months, depending on how often you use it. This prevents build-up of oils and/or lime scale and other deposits from damaging the surface of acrylic tubs.

Water care and maintenance should become a weekly routine that you perform, preferably around the same time each week, so that you don’t run into problems such as bacteria build-up, foaming or chemical imbalances. To maintain your hot tub you should always have on hand items such as:

  • A test kit that checks for pH and alkalinity levels
  • Chlorine or Bromine, depending on which home spa chemicals you decide to use in your spa
  • A de-foaming agent to combat build-up of particulates and oils in the water
  • A clarifier to take care of cloudy water
  • An extra filter for emergency changes when needed

There’s nothing worse than wanting to enjoy your portable home spa and suddenly discovering the water chemistry isn’t adjusted properly and having to wait while you order the proper chemicals. That’s why proper weekly care and maintenance means having the right hot tub supplies on hand. It is a must for every home spa owner interested in maintaining a trouble-free spa.
