Selecting the Proper Hot Tub Heaters for Your Spa

Hot tub heaters come in many sizes and prices, so how can you decide which is the best hottub heater for your spa? The answer depends on the size of your hot tub, the amount of insulation around it, and its location. The heater should be powerful enough to keep the water hot while the cover is off and you are actually using it, and be durable enough to last a long time. A better quality heater is always a good investment in the long run, so most experts recommend selecting the best heater you can afford even if it means giving up some other accessory or extra feature.

Traditional heaters for home spas are prone to corrosion because they actually come into contact with the water in the hottub. You can help extend the life of the heater by maintaining good water chemistry, but even the best water quality practices will not prevent the heater from eventually failing in most tubs.

Because of this, it is better to buy a hot tub that has a good warranty and a cabinet design that allows easy access to the heater for the inevitable time when it must be replaced. There are two main options when choosing a heater:

  • Natural Gas Heaters – Look for a stainless steel, corrosion-free burner. The larger the burner (BTU rating), the faster the hot tub will be ready for use. Look for an efficient model to reduce energy costs.
  • Electric Hottub Heaters - Look for corrosion-free burners with copper and bronze fittings for dependable performance. Look for a high limit temperature control to prevent overheating. The best heaters are covered by a comprehensive warranty.

More and more hot tub manufacturers are offering heaters that do not come into direct contact with the water. The heater itself is draped around a metal tube, and the hot tub water flows through the tube. This is a better way to keep the water comfortable because the heating elements do not corrode and lose their ability to heat the water quickly and efficiently. The initial cost of your hottub will be higher with this type of equipment, but it is the best choice in the long run to ensure maximum durability and life of the heater.
