Children in Hot Tubs – Play it Safe!
Soaking in your home spa is for the most part an enjoyable
and safe experience, but you have to take some precautions when it comes to
children in hot tubs. There are dangers for a small child around any
body of water, whether it’s a lake, a pool or a spa. Granted, the swimming
pool and the hot tub are a lot safer than natural bodies of water, but it’s
nevertheless important to follow these safety guidelines.
Child hot tub safety always involves having a
lockable custom spa cover for your hot tub. Pools should be fenced and
accessed through a self-closing gate with a latch. What’s even more
important to play it safe is adult supervision to prevent accidents or a
possible drowning. Don’t let a phone call or other distraction turn a fun
experience for your children into a possible tragedy.
Another safety consideration is the temperature of the water your child is
exposed to in a hot tub. Children, especially toddlers and infants, have
thinner skin and are thus prone to overheating. According to government
safety guidelines, a child should not stay in hot tubs for longer than five
minutes at a time. Infants and toddlers should not be taken into a spa and
exposed to dangerously hot temperatures at all.
Hot tubs and home spas are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria because
of the heat and moist conditions. Play it safe and protect your children and
your family by maintaining the proper ph and disinfectant level with
home spa chemicals. The safest
disinfectant level is three parts per million (3 ppm) for chlorine and 4.5
ppm for bromine. Keep your water at a ph level of 7.2 – 7.6 with the proper
hot tub supplies. That will get rid of
all the nasty critters so you and your children can enjoy the family hot tub
safely.
