Aromatherapy for Hot Tubs
Aromatherapy for Hot Tubs
Aromatherapy for hot tubs offers a healthful and
natural way to get more from your spa experience. It is a natural treatment
system designed to assist the body's natural ability to maintain itself by
the use of essential oils. It is simple to use aromatherapy products in your
home spa or hot tub.
Most aromatherapy spa products are a combination of essential oils. Essential
oils are highly concentrated extracts, which are distilled from a variety of
plant materials. Individually, different oils are known to relieve a variety
of problems, ranging from stress to depression to PMS. Most aromatherapy
products sold for use in hot tubs are sold in mixes, called “synergies”.
Before using aromatherapy products check both the instructions and the water
temperature of your home spa. Most essential oils do not work in too high a
temperature. You may need to lower the hot
tub heater output to lower the water temperature. In most cases, you put
in five to ten drops of the aromatherapy product moments before you get in.
Relax in your spa for about twenty minutes and enjoy your treatment.
One caution to know: essential oils float on top of the spa or
portable hot tub water and may leave a
thin film of undiluted oil on your skin. Some aromatherapy products can be a
potentially irritant or may cause reactions in people with sensitive skins.
Should any irritation occur with any such product, rinse the area with cool,
clean water and apply a light skin cream. The irritation should go away
within an hour.
Also, some aromatherapy products can form a scum, or ring around the sides
of spas and hot tubs. So realize some extra cleaning may be in order.
Alternative uses of aromatic and therapeutic products include using
diffusers, which fill the air around you while you lounge in your home spa.
This takes away the need for extra cleaning and temperature control of your
in-ground or portable home spa.
